The People’s Park Centenary – Tracey Cartledge

The People’s Park Centenary Mosaics

Longford Park, Stretford

The Friends of Longford Park commissioned two circular mosaic features to mark the park’s 2012 centenary. I worked with Y5 pupils at St. Hilda’s C of E Primary School to develop images based on the park’s history, which we explored together. The park was originally the gardens of Longford Hall, home to John and Enriqueta Rylands. After the death of the philanthropic entrepreneur in 1888, followed by his wife’s death in 1908, a determined group of community leaders persuaded the council to purchase the estate and create a “People’s Park”, which officially opened in 1912.
