Piccadilly Station Journey – Tracey Cartledge

Journey

Piccadilly Station

Central Manchester Development Corporation commissioned Partnership Art Limited to create a landmark feature for this ‘city gateway’ in 1990.

Following extensive research about the history of this area, the team (Diane Gorvin, Phil Bews, Terry Eaton and Tracey Cartledge) proposed on a design that featured a chimney-like tall column with three tall shadows on the retaining wall behind it. In the end the column was not made but the shadows, three bronze relief works made with students from nearby Shena Simon College, and the pavement lighting feature went ahead. To mark the spot where the column should have been, we made a bronze relief circle with a short poem that I wrote to illustrate the theme of the work.
