Our Olympic Heroes – Tracey Cartledge

Our Olympic Heroes

Olympic Inspired School Sculpture Project

This project was inspired by the dual themes of ‘the Olympic Games’ and ‘eco’ for a special Arts Week to celebrate the 2012 Olympic Games. The figures were assembled from found objects in the Olympic colours, depicting Olympic sporting heroes. As a bonus, the Y5 children learned about British sculptor Tony Cragg and researched our selected UK Olympians: Chris Hoy, Jessica Ennis, Usain Bolt, Rebecca Adlington and Steve Redgrave.

Just like Tony Cragg, they made their large-scale figures by assembling found objects into the silhouette shapes of the five heroes. Each one was composed of one single colour, using the five colours of the Olympic rings: red, green, blue, yellow and black.
